Small Business owner and public servant, Herman Otten has been representing the people of District 6 since 2012. During his service in the State House, Otten has established a record of commonsense conservative values that supports limited government and responsible spending.

Otten has lived in the Tea area his entire life and graduated from from Lennox Hight School in 1985. He joined his father in the construction field. In 1996, the duo formed Otten Construction, Inc. District 6 has been home for the Otten family for generations tracing back to the 1800’s.
Herman and wife, Melissa along with step daughters Ally (22), Andi (17), and their son Hayden (13) are active members of the community. The family attends Trinity Lutheran Church in Tea, and Herman is a lifetime member.
Melissa is also a successful small business owner, owning and operating Parkside Dental in Tea. Melissa has been a Dentist for 16 years and in 2010 she decided to open her own practice. She started with 3 employees and now her business has grown to 10 full-time employees.

In 1996, Otten was elected Mayor of Tea at the age of 29 and served for four years and then was elected to the city council in 2005 and served as councilman for nine years. In 2012, Otten was elected to serve District 6 as one of its Representatives,

Otten believes it is vitally important the State must continue to pass a budget that is structurally balanced and maintain reserves to be used in times of economic distress.

Endorsed by the NRA, Otten is an avid outdoors man and works to defend our citizen's Second Amendment rights and to preserve our sportsman's heritage so that South Dakotans will have opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors for years to come.
Healthcare Promoter
During his tenure in the legislature, has advocated for affordable health care choices for South Dakotans. Otten also has served on a task force charged with improving rural access for health care and has been active to advance access to mental health services. During the 2020 Legislative Session, Otten led efforts on two bills to increase the ability to deliver mental health services using tele-health methods.
